This is an excellent video by Arthur C. Brooks at the American Enterprise Institute explaining why the free enterprise system is the one that results in the most lasting happiness, the greatest fairness, and the most effective help for those truly in need.
It also gets at the heart of why I refuse to get involved in politics any longer. If the free enterprise system provides the benefits noted above — and I believe it does — then that's where I should spend my time and energy. I can do more good for myself and those around me by engaging in the marketplace. I should be an example of and enjoy the liberty afforded by that very system.
Politics, on the other hand, is a fantastic way to spend a lot of time, money, and energy, accomplish almost nothing, damage relationships in the process, and come to the end of each day bitter and insular. I wouldn't wish that life on anyone.
